:: Noise

Densely-understoried and layered landscaping, especially evergreen, can absorb sound significantly. Vines covering stone and cement retaining walls (part of the original parkway design) can muffle some of the amplifier effect of sidewalls and overpasses. Even when vegetation is not dense enough to absorb sound, it can reduce the stress of parkway noise for nearby residents and park users by screening the source of the noise.
