Parkways
incorporated a number of safety features that revolutionized
traffic design: limiting access by eliminating at-grade crossings
reduced collisions at intersections; varying roadway alignments
calmed speed and kept drivers alert; eliminating billboards
and unnecessary signs removed dangerous distractions; separating
north and southbound lanes by different grades and medians
eliminated headlight glare and head-on collisions; tree canopies
are traffic-calming and also reduce sunlight glare. When Moses
later decided to add chainlink fences in the medians to prevent
pedestrians from attempting to cross the highway, he instructed
his landscapers to grow honeysuckle on them so that they would
also reduce oncoming headlight glare.
We
have requested accident data from NYS DOT, and will post it
when we receive it.
